Product Description

Monoket (Isosorbide Mononitrate)

General information

Monoket belongs to a class of drugs known as nitrates. It works by relaxing and widening blood vessels so blood can flow more easily to the heart. This medicine is used to prevent chest pain (angina) in patients with a certain heart condition (coronary artery disease). This medication will not relieve chest pain once it occurs. This medication may also be used with other drugs to improve the symptoms of heart failure (trouble breathing).

Take Monoket exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Take this medication by mouth, usually twice daily. Take the first dose of the day when you wake up, then take the second dose 7 hours later. It is important to take the drug at the same times each day. Swallow the pill whole. For angina prevention the dosage ranges from 30 to 60 mg once a day, or 20 mg two times a day.

Before taking Monoket you should talk with your doctor if you have congestive heart failure, low blood pressure, kidney disease, anemia. This drug may make you dizzy. Do not drive or perform tasks that require alertness. Limit alcoholic beverages. Alcohol can increase some of the side effects. Avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position, or you may feel dizzy. Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist that you are using this medication. Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this medication.

Do not use Monoket if you are taking sildenafil (Viagra), are allergic to isosorbide mononitrate, isosorbide dinitrate, or nitroglycerin, or if you have early signs of a heart attack. Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Possible side effect

Get emergency medical help if you have headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, flushing, irregular heartbeat, fainting, itching, swelling of the face, tongue, throat, rash, trouble breathing, constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, warmth, uneven heart rate. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor.

Drug interactions

Tell your doctor about all other medications you use, especially: calcium channel blockers (nimodipine, verapamil, nifedipine), beta-blockers (propranolol, bisoprolol, metoprolol, atenolol), drugs for male erectile problems (tadalafil, vardenafil, sildenafil), dihydroergotamine, ergotamine, rosiglitazone , blood pressure medications (verapamil, metoprolol, bumetanide, triamterene), alpha-blockers (alfuzosin, tamsulosin). Interaction between two medications does not always mean that you must stop taking one of them. Tell your doctor or prescriber about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking.

Missed dose

Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Don't take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once. The overdose symptoms are slow heartbeat, vision changes, severe nausea, vomiting, sweating, cold or clammy skin, bluish fingers, toes or lips.

Store the medicine at room temperature between 59-86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Keep all drugs away from reach of children and pets. Store it in a tight container.
