Ketotifen fights with allergy. It possesses antihistamine and anti-anaphylactic activity. Mechanism of action consists in inhibition of histamine and leukotrienes release, suppression of accumulation of eosinophils in the respiratory tract, suppression of hyper activity of respiratory tract caused by platelet activating factor or exposure to allergens. Ketotifen effectively prevents bronchospasm but do not dilate bronchus.
Adults should take 1 mg twice a day (in morning and evening) during the meal. If necessary, the daily dose can be increased to 4 mg. Children take 0.025 mg per kg of body weight twice a day. Children older than 3 years with body weight more than 25 kg should take 1 mg of Ketotifen twice a day.
Therapeutic effect of ketotifen develops slowly during 1-2 months. The medicine should not be used during pregnancy, especially in its first trimester and during breastfeeding. Abrupt discontinuation of the treatment should not be done for patients with bronchial asthma and bronchospastic syndrome especially those taking glucocorticosteroids systematically, due to possible development of adrenal insufficiency. The drug should not be used simultaneously with oral anti-diabetic agents, as this can cause thrombocytopenia.
Do not take this medicine if you are hypersensitivity to ketotifen.
Possible side effect
If you experience drowsiness, dry mouth, mild dizziness, mental retardation reactions do not worry. These symptoms usually disappear in a few days after beginning of the treatment. In rare cases dyspepsia, increased appetite and weight gain can occur.
Ketotifen increases effects of hypnotics , antihistaminic drugs, and alcohol.
Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Don't take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Overdose symptoms are not described. If you tool too much of this medication seek for immediate medical help.
Store your medicines at room temperature between between 59-77 degrees F (15-25 degrees C). Store away from moisture and light. Keep it out of the reach of children and away from pets.
