Avandia is an oral drug that reduces the amount of sugar (glucose) in the blood. It is used for treating patients with type 2 diabetes and is in a class of anti-diabetic drugs called thiazolidinediones. It is sometimes used in combination with other medicines, but it is not for treating type 1 diabetes. Avandia is not recommended for use with insulin.
Take Avandia exactly as prescribed by your doctor. It can be taken with or without meals and is usually taken in the morning and evening. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results. Daily doses range from 4 to 8 mg either with or without other antidiabetic medications. There is no additional benefit for doses greater than 8 mg per day.
Avandia should not be used by patients with heart failure. The risk of heart attacks may be greater in those with established heart disease and taking nitrates or individuals receiving insulin. Tell your doctor if you have liver disease, eye problems caused by diabetes, heart attack or stroke. Women may be more likely than men to have bone fractures in the upper arm, hand, or foot while taking Avandia. Avoid drinking alcohol. It can lower your blood sugar. It is important to adhere to dietary instructions and to regularly have blood glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin tested.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not use Avandia if you have type 1 diabetes, or if you are in a state of diabetic ketoacidosis.
